MED50 – The Mediterranean on the 2050 horizon

MED50 is an exhaustive study by Plan Bleu in which more than a hundred experts from 20 countries have participated. Based on the information provided, it warns us that the situation in the Mediterranean (region and sea) in 2050 will be alarming, with a risk of local collapse.

It highlights three key developments:
1. 2,3 °𝐂 increase in average temperature.
2. 20-30% increase in population.
3. Tropicalisation of marine ecosystems with more frequent heat waves.

And a conclusion:
It is time to act and plan joint action to address the challenges facing the Mediterranean. It is time to declare it a ‘global commons’ and turn it into a laboratory of solutions.
